Favela Painting

Have you ever seen anything so colourful? These images are of the Favela Painting 'O Morro' project in the community of Santa Marta, Rio de Janeiro. Developed by Dutch creative duo Haas&Hahn (Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn), Favela Painting was launched in 2006 as a way of creating community-driving art interventions in Brazil. Haas&Hahn completed a couple of large-scale murals before embarking on this massive housing project, which was inspired by the idea to paint an entire hillside in the centre of Rio. Using a flexible concept of colourful rays that can be easily expanded, they created a design for the houses around the square and part of the street, and set about painting along with members of the community. You can read more about the project on the Favela Painting website.
